Prepare for submission

How to prepare a graphical abstract for a journal

A journal graphical abstract must do two things at once: communicate the paper clearly and satisfy the exact technical, rights, and disclosure rules of the destination journal.

Always confirm the current instructions for your exact journal.

The safest approach

Treat the target journal as the source of truth

Publisher-level guidance is useful, but individual journals may differ in whether a graphical abstract is required, its dimensions, accepted files, word limits, and AI disclosure rules. Verify the live author instructions before final export.

Check requirements before designing

Record the target dimensions, orientation, file types, resolution, font guidance, text limits, color mode, and upload location. Also check whether the journal calls the asset a graphical abstract, visual abstract, highlights image, or another name.

Starting from the specification prevents late cropping and illegible labels. If the journal provides a template, use its safe area and final display size as design constraints from the beginning.

Prepare a technically clean file

Export only the formats accepted by the journal. Check pixel dimensions, resolution, embedded fonts where applicable, and the appearance of thin lines, gradients, and transparency after export.

Keep a source copy of your research text and design decisions. Graphical Abstract Lab currently produces PNG drafts; convert or rebuild the final file only when the journal requires another format.

Review science, rights, and disclosure

Every author should confirm that labels, structures, units, directions, and comparisons match the manuscript. A visually plausible output is not evidence that a relationship is scientifically correct.

Confirm permission for third-party assets and follow the journal's current policy for generative AI assistance. Preserve an internal record of what was generated, what was edited, and who approved the final image.

Four checks before upload

A compliant file depends on more than dimensions alone.

Scope

Confirm whether the asset is required, optional, or requested after acceptance.

Specification

Match the journal's current size, resolution, format, and typography rules.

Rights

Verify that every icon, photo, diagram, and adapted element can be submitted.

Disclosure

Follow the journal's current authorship and AI-assistance disclosure policy.

Preflight

Journal submission checklist

Repeat this check against the live author instructions immediately before submission.

The exact journal—not only the publisher—has been checked.
Canvas dimensions and orientation match the current specification.
File type, resolution, color, and transparency are accepted.
Labels are legible at the journal's final display size.
All visual assets have appropriate submission and publication rights.
Authors have verified claims, relationships, spelling, and required disclosures.
Prepare a reviewable draft

Build the research story before final journal formatting.

Create a clear PNG draft, verify the science, then adapt it to the target journal's current specification.
